Europe is establishing a 'nuclear power U-turn' policy by designating nuclear power as the cheapest clean energy source.
The Belgian government, holding the presidency of the European Union (EU), jointly hosted the 'Nuclear Energy Summit' with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Brussels on the 21st (local time).
This was the first time a summit-level meeting focusing solely on nuclear energy was held in Europe to discuss the role of nuclear power in reducing fossil fuel use, strengthening energy security, and promoting economic development.
In her speech, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated, "Extending the safe operation of nuclear power plants is the most cost-effective way to secure large-scale clean energy sources," adding, "It can help establish a cost-efficient pathway toward net zero (zero carbon emissions)."
She also emphasized that to enable the nuclear sector to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality goals, efforts are needed not only to extend the lifespan of nuclear plants but also to make large-scale investments and technological innovations such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said, "We have a tradition of over 70 years in the nuclear field," and added, "From the perspectives of net zero goals and geopolitics, the role of European countries is important. We need nuclear power."
