Government: "Resident doctors who leave their training and do not return will face license suspension starting next week"

"Residents Violating Work Commencement Orders"
"Intern Passers Unable to Register Appointment This Month Cannot Become Residents Next Year"

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 21st that it urges residents who have left their workplaces in violation of work commencement orders to promptly return to their posts, and that if they fail to return, their medical licenses will be suspended starting next week.

Park Min-su, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, stated at the briefing of the Central Accident Response Headquarters for the doctors' collective action held that morning, "Regarding violations of the work commencement order, we will proceed with suspending medical licenses in principle starting next week."

Vice Minister Park urged, "Please do not hesitate any longer and return immediately to the hospital where you are training, for the sake of patients, your colleagues who are covering your absence, and yourselves who chose the profession of a doctor."

The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained the application of training regulations in case of non-return on the same day.

Vice Minister Park said, "All training hospitals must complete the resident appointment registration in the 'Training Status Management System' by the end of March. Therefore, if those who passed as interns this year do not return to the training hospital by the end of March and fail to register their appointment, they will not complete the internship training period and will not be able to become residents next year."

In addition, according to the 'Regulations on Specialist Training and Qualification Recognition,' if a resident has a training gap of more than one month, additional training must be completed. If the additional training period exceeds three months, the acquisition of specialist qualification may be delayed by one year.

Vice Minister Park explained, "If a resident who has not worked since March receives a three-month license suspension, the additional training period will exceed three months, so they will not be able to obtain specialist qualification in the year they complete their residency."

He added, "Please do not hesitate any longer and return immediately to the hospital where you are training, for the sake of patients, your colleagues who are covering your absence, and yourselves who chose the profession of a doctor."
