Russia: "Korea Cannot Refuse the 'Dishonorable' Democracy Summit"

Russia recently criticized the Democracy Summit held in Seoul as a "dishonorable event." On the 20th (local time), Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a briefing, "It is surprising that South Korea did not withdraw its consent in advance to host such a dishonorable event."

She pointed out, "I am confident that any somewhat independent country would have done so," adding, "But unfortunately, it seems South Korea took this risk because it could not disobey the orders of foreign superiors."

The Democracy Summit was held in Seoul from the 18th to this day under the theme "Democracy for the Next Generation." This event, launched under the leadership of U.S. President Joe Biden to strengthen the unity of the democratic camp, was held solely outside the United States for the first time.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken strongly criticized Russia and China as sources of disinformation during the event, stating, "Our competitors and adversaries exploit divisions within democratic societies by spreading doubt, cynicism, and instability through disinformation."

Spokesperson Zakharova firmly rejected the accusation from the event that "Russia conducted disinformation campaigns," and claimed that the U.S., together with Ukraine, fabricated false information that "Russia massacred civilians in Bucha, Ukraine." She also said, "We are being accused with disinformation by those involved in disinformation."

She stated, "We cannot tolerate malicious information manipulation that tarnishes China's honor and spreads accusations," and criticized, "This is a typical pattern of Western behavior based on prejudice and double standards."

Regarding reports that Elon Musk's space company SpaceX is building a spy (reconnaissance) satellite network under contracts with U.S. government agencies, she criticized it as a "serious threat to space security." Zakharova said, "We know that the U.S. is trying to involve the private sector to realize its military ambitions in space," and pointed out, "Such systems could become legitimate targets for military retaliation."

She also added, "We understand that NATO countries are testing new mechanisms to cause internal upheaval and change in this way."
