In response to the government's expansion of medical school quotas, medical schools in the Cheonan area have expressed their welcome while also stating their commitment to implementing measures to prevent a decline in the quality of education.
On the 20th, Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, announced the allocation results of medical school student quotas by university for the 2025 academic year at the Government Seoul Office.
According to the announcement, Dankook University, a medical school in the Cheonan area, saw its quota significantly increase from the existing 40 students to 120 students. Soonchunhyang University also increased from 93 to 150 students.
While local universities expressed their welcome, they also pledged to ensure thorough follow-up measures such as expanding educational conditions.
Dankook University stated, "The request for increasing the medical school quota was derived based on reasonable grounds including solving regional medical issues, current educational and research capabilities, and future investment plans," expressing satisfaction.
They added, "Since the establishment of the medical school, we have had spaces and facilities capable of educating more than 100 students," and said, "We plan to develop into 'a representative medical school outside the metropolitan area leading a revolutionary change in regional healthcare' by investing additionally in facilities and expanding educational conditions."
Furthermore, they announced that they will actively consider selecting local talents.
Dankook University said, "Regardless of this quota increase, Dankook University is reviewing the selection of local talents to nurture medical personnel who settle in the region," and added, "We will prepare to expand the selection of local talents in the Greater Chungcheong area according to the increase in student numbers."
Soonchunhyang University emphasized that 'normalization of school education' is a priority regarding the quota increase.
Soonchunhyang University stated, "The urgent matter is the normalization of school education and maintaining the quality of education for the allocated number of students," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that the quality of classes does not decline despite the increased quota."
These universities collectively agreed to pursue normalization through continuous dialogue concerning faculty and resident resignations and medical students' collective leave of absence.
