Starting next year, the number of medical school seats in the Daejeon area will significantly increase.

According to the announcement by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 20th, out of the nationwide increase of 2,000 medical school seats, 201 seats have been allocated to the medical schools in the Daejeon area: Chungnam National University, Eulji University, and Konyang University.

Of the total 2,000 additional seats, 1,639 seats, or 82%, have been allocated to non-metropolitan areas. Regional base national medical schools will expand their total capacity to around 200 seats, while small medical schools with fewer than 50 students will increase to about 100 seats.

Accordingly, Chungnam National University will increase its existing capacity from 110 to 200 seats, and Konyang University and Eulji University will each increase from 49 and 40 seats to 100 seats respectively.

Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, “The increase in regional medical school seats is a positive signal that the difficulties in supplying medical personnel, which are directly related to the health and lives of citizens, will be resolved.” He added, “We will spare no support to complete a comprehensive essential medical system for citizens living in an aging society.”
