Wild Boar Hunting Begins!... Goryeong-gun Deploys 'Nuisance Wildlife Damage Prevention Team' Hunters

Selected 26 Final Candidates Through Open Recruitment

Wild boar ‘hunters’ have appeared in Goryeong, Gyeongbuk.

Goryeong County (Governor Lee Nam-cheol) announced on the 19th that 26 ‘hunters’ of the 2024 Nuisance Wildlife Damage Prevention Team, selected through an open recruitment, will be actively deployed in the field.

Goryeong County operates the Nuisance Wildlife Damage Prevention Team year-round, and with the spring planting season approaching, the members are launching hunting operations. Prior to this, hunting insurance enrollment and safety training for the members were conducted to prepare for possible safety accidents during the wildlife capture process.

The Damage Prevention Team carries out activities such as ▲ intensive capture of wild boars to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) ▲ responding to situations where there is concern for human injury due to wild boar appearances ▲ and relief efforts upon receiving reports of crop damage caused by nuisance wildlife.

Wildlife capture is operated in a way that when farmers who have suffered crop damage report to the eup/myeon office or the Environment Division of Goryeong County Office, the Damage Prevention Team, authorized for proxy capture, conducts on-site patrols and captures.

Previously, Goryeong County operated the Damage Prevention Team from January to December last year, capturing 444 wild boars and 704 water deer. As of March this year, 163 wild boars have been captured to minimize crop damage during the spring planting season and to block ASF.

Lee Nam-cheol, Governor of Goryeong County, said, “We will make further efforts to minimize damage to farms through the continuous operation of the Nuisance Wildlife Damage Prevention Team so that farmers’ income can be preserved.”

The governor added, “We also plan to promote the payment of crop damage compensation, including support for the installation costs of wildlife damage prevention facilities, and to expedite the project so that these facilities can be installed before the severe damage during the harvest season.”
