Permanent Operation of Reenactment Events Until December 29
The Cultural Heritage Administration's Office of Royal Palaces and Tombs and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation will operate the 'Sumunjang Patrol Ceremony' on a regular basis from the 23rd of this month until December 29th. This traditional cultural event reenacts the patrols of the Sunragun, who were responsible for the safety of the Joseon capital. It was first introduced in 2022 to commemorate the reopening of Gwanghwamun Square. Alongside the Gyeongbokgung Sumunjang Changing Ceremony, which reenacts the guard change of the Sumunjang and Sumungun who protected the palace gates, it attracted attention as an event held outside the palace.
At that time, the Sunragun marched from Gwanghwamun Square at Gyeongbokgung Palace to the statue of King Sejong. This year, as a regular event, the route has been expanded from the Gwanghwamun area to the Insadong cultural street. A representative from the Office of Royal Palaces and Tombs stated, "Not only the Sunragun but also about sixty Joseon-era military personnel including the Sumunjang (the officer responsible for guarding the capital and palace gates), Jongsagwan (officials who assisted the Sumunjang and performed government duties), and Gapsa (professional soldiers selected through examinations) will participate to provide a rich viewing experience."
The event will be held every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday at 3 p.m. for one hour. The Office of Royal Palaces and Tombs also mentioned, "There will be a time at Bukinsa Madang Square near Exit 6 of Anguk Station where visitors can take commemorative photos with the Sunragun."
