Daejukdo, an uninhabited island in Changwon, is expected to become a popular attraction for citizens.
Changwon City in Gyeongnam held a lighting ceremony for the ‘Daejukdo Turtle Ship Landscape Lighting’ at the event hall next to Jinhaeru.
A sculpture shaped like the head and tail of a turtle ship was installed on the uninhabited island of Daejukdo, along with landscape lighting illuminating the entire island, creating an artistic work that resembles a single turtle ship.
Starting from the lighting ceremony held on the afternoon of the 18th, the distinctive sculpture will serve as a unique daytime attraction, while the colorful landscape lighting at night will decorate the night sea of Jinhaeru, effectively promoting the area during the Gunhangje Festival and providing a unique spectacle to attract tourists and further revitalize the local economy.
About 100 people attended the opening ceremony, including Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon City, Kim I-geun, Chairman of Changwon City Council, Kim Il-yong, Chairman of Jinhae Fisheries Cooperative, city and provincial council members, UDT veterans association, Daejukdo volunteer group, and local residents.
The scale of the newly installed turtle ship landscape lighting measures 188 meters from head to tail and 40 meters in height from sea level to the head, making it the largest turtle ship landscape lighting installation in Korea.
Moreover, it is not just a unique attraction; together with the UDT Memorial Tower installed at the summit of the island, it is expected to further inspire the patriotic spirit of General Yi Sun-sin and raise security awareness among tourists.
Mayor Hong said, “I hope the splendid landscape lighting of the Daejukdo turtle ship will offer a new visual experience and enjoyment to citizens and tourists visiting Jinhaeru and Sokcheon Port,” adding, “By illuminating the Daejukdo turtle ship landscape lighting, we will do our best to contribute to the brilliant development of Changwon City as a central city in Northeast Asia.”
Meanwhile, Changwon City is preparing for the future of the Jinhae area by promoting various projects such as the Jinhaeru Waterfront Development Project, Jinhae Sea View Path Creation Project, and Marine Leisure Tourism Hub Contest Project, striving to become a marine leisure tourism hub city.
