Discussion with OpenAI on 'ChatGPT'
On the 18th, it was reported that Apple is in discussions to integrate Google's generative artificial intelligence (AI) Gemini into the iPhone.
Bloomberg reported on the 18th (local time) that Apple is seeking cooperation with Google to strengthen its lagging generative AI capabilities. Competitor Samsung Electronics released the new Galaxy S24 in January, which features generative AI combining Gauss and Gemini.
Apple is preparing new features based on its own AI model for the upcoming iPhone operating system iOS 18, but Bloomberg cited sources saying the company is looking for a partner to enhance generative AI functions, including image creation and text generation.
If a contract between Google and Apple is finalized, Gemini is expected to secure billions of potential users worldwide, giving it an advantage in the AI competition.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated earlier this month, "Apple is making significant investments in AI," and announced plans to reveal detailed generative AI utilization plans by the end of this year.
Bloomberg explained that Apple and Google have not yet decided on contract terms, service names, or AI implementation methods, and that the contract details will not be announced until June, when Apple holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Bloomberg also evaluated, "The deal with Apple will be Gemini's most notable partnership and will greatly aid Google's AI efforts."
However, foreign media pointed out that such negotiations could be interpreted as a sign that Apple's own AI technology is lagging behind competitors.
It is also reported that Apple is in related discussions not only with Google but also with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT supported by Microsoft (MS).
Previously, Apple has been testing its own large-scale language model since early last year. Some employees even tested a chatbot called Apple GPT. However, since Apple's AI technology does not match that of Google or Microsoft (MS), it is opting for partnerships.
It was also revealed that Apple may partner with other companies like OpenAI or sign contracts with multiple partners.
