After the Opening of Busan Port, BPA's First 'Historic Port Relocation' Successfully Underway in Initial Phase

Bukhang Singamman Pier, Return from March 15 → Move to New Port

Korea Hutchison Terminal Prepares for Full Operation at New Location

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Kang Jun-seok) successfully completed the first phase of the largest port relocation in the history of Korean ports?the return of Shingamman Pier?on March 15.

After the Opening of Busan Port, BPA's First 'Historic Port Relocation' Successfully Underway in Initial Phase Appearance of returning equipment at Shingamman Yard.

The functional relocation of the Busan Port North Port container terminals, the first of its kind since the opening of Busan Port, involves ① the relocation of the Shingamman Pier operator (DPCT) to the New Port and the return of the pier ② the relocation and commencement of operations of the Jaseongdae Pier operator (Hutchison) to Shingamman Pier and Gamman Pier Berth No. 1 ③ the termination of operations at Jaseongdae Pier ④ the commencement of the North Port Phase 2 redevelopment, representing an organic functional reallocation. This complex process involves the simultaneous transfer of cargo volumes, facility improvements, and operational preparations by the existing terminal operators.

To ensure the seamless execution of this tightly interlocked schedule, BPA established a dedicated team (North Port Operation Preparation Task Force (TF)) last year for organic collaboration with the government and operators. Through weekly review meetings, they have continuously monitored the status of terminal relocations, listened to current issues, and discussed solutions to prevent any disruption in container logistics flow.

As the first step in the North Port container terminal functional relocation, DPCT, the operator of Shingamman Pier, ceased operations within the North Port and smoothly returned the pier on March 15. They are currently preparing for new operations at New Port Berth 7 (Phases 2-5).

Korea Hutchison Terminal, selected as the new operator for Shingamman Pier and Gamman Pier Berth No. 1, began operational preparations on March 16.

Prior to this, Hutchison installed signboards at the Gamman Pier (Berth No. 1) operation building starting October 20 of last year, signaling the official start of the terminal relocation.

Hutchison plans to transfer cargo volumes and handling equipment to the new terminal while maintaining service continuity for existing shipping customers. They will commence maritime transport using barges in the first half of this year and aim to complete all relocation work before the start of the North Port Phase 2 redevelopment in 2024.

BPA President Kang Jun-seok stated, “The terminal relocation of Hutchison at Jaseongdae Pier is an unprecedented large-scale move involving the entire operational pier. Therefore, the government, operators, and BPA’s joint dedicated team (North Port Operation Preparation Task Force (TF)) will continue to cooperate closely to ensure the smooth completion of the relocation schedule.”
