Will AI iPhone Launch... Apple and Google Discuss Integrating 'Gemini'

Discussions with OpenAI... Signal of Apple's AI Capability Shortfall?
Announcement Expected After June WWDC

Apple is discussing the possibility of integrating Google's generative artificial intelligence (AI) Gemini into the iPhone.

On the 18th (local time), Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Apple is negotiating to secure a license for Google's Gemini to support new features to be added to this year's iPhone software.

The two companies have not yet decided on specific contract terms, implementation methods, or branding. Bloomberg expects that if a contract is signed between Apple and Google, the service will be built based on their search partnership.

Apple has recently held similar discussions with OpenAI.

If a contract is finalized between Google and Apple, Gemini will gain access to billions of potential users worldwide, giving it an advantage in the AI competition.

Apple is preparing new features based on its own AI model in the upcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18. Gemini is expected to perform generative AI tasks such as image creation and writing.

However, foreign media pointed out that these negotiations could be interpreted as a sign that Apple's own AI technology is lagging behind competitors. Apple has been testing its own large-scale language model since early last year. Some employees have also tested a chatbot called Apple GPT. Nevertheless, Apple's AI technology is considered to fall short compared to Google and Microsoft (MS), leading to the choice of partnership.

Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated in February that Apple would introduce generative AI by the end of this year.

Bloomberg evaluated, "A deal with Apple would be Gemini's most notable partnership and would greatly aid Google's AI efforts." Previously, Samsung Electronics embedded generative AI combining its self-developed Gauss and Gemini in the Galaxy S24.

However, Bloomberg reported that it is unlikely that contract-related matters will be announced by June, when Apple holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It also stated that Apple might partner with other companies like OpenAI or sign contracts with multiple partners.
