The Only Nationally Certified Qualification for Lifesaving Rescue Certification

Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) conducted the first 2024 national water rescue certification exam on the 17th at the swimming pool of Nambu University in Gwangju Metropolitan City.

According to the Coast Guard on the 18th, the water rescue certification exam is the only nationally recognized qualification for water lifesaving. Anyone who has completed 64 hours of preliminary training at an educational institution designated by the Korea Coast Guard can apply regardless of gender or age.

The exam subjects include seven areas: swimming techniques, water rescue, equipment rescue, comprehensive rescue, first aid, and the use of rescue equipment. Candidates must score at least 60 points overall and at least 40 points in each subject out of 100 to pass.

A certified water rescuer is a person equipped with professional skills to rescue people in distress on the water. Upon obtaining the certification, they can work as water safety education instructors or as lifesaving and safety management personnel at beaches, water play areas, and water leisure businesses.

A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, “We will strive to ensure that the water rescuer exam is conducted safely and fairly.”

Meanwhile, this exam, held for the first time this year within the jurisdiction of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard, had a total of 28 applicants (18 men and 10 women).
