Selection of Preferred Negotiation Partner for Private Investment Project of Gumi City Metropolitan Integrated Biogas Facility
Hyundai Engineering & Construction recently announced on the 18th that it has been selected as the preferred negotiator for the Gumi City Wide-Area Integrated Biogasification Facility Private Investment Project. This project involves reconstructing the food waste, sewage sludge, and manure treatment facilities within the Gumi Sewage Treatment Plant located in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongbuk, and producing biogas from 475 tons of organic waste generated daily in Gumi City and Chilgok-gun, which will be purified and supplied as city gas in an eco-friendly renewable energy project.
The purpose is to integrate and underground the currently separately operated aging facilities to resolve odor issues and improve operational efficiency. The total project cost is 176.7 billion KRW, with a construction period of 48 months from the start date, and it will be operated for 20 years after completion.
The biogas produced at the Gumi City Wide-Area Integrated Biogasification Facility is planned to be supplied as city gas to nearby areas. The expected annual production volume is approximately 5.5 million N㎥, which can supply about 9,000 households annually when used as city gas.
Since building a pilot facility in Cheongna, Incheon in 2008 and starting the development of organic waste biogasification energy technology, Hyundai Engineering & Construction has secured core technologies by acquiring related environmental new technologies and green certifications and registering 18 patents domestically and internationally.
In particular, as part of a national research project led by the Ministry of Environment, the Chungju Food Waste Bioenergy Center, constructed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction and operated since 2016, processes 80 tons of food waste daily using purely proprietary technology optimized for the characteristics of food waste generated in Korea. The biogas extracted during this process is used as raw material to produce hydrogen with a purity of over 99.99%, which is supplied as fuel for hydrogen vehicles at a nearby hydrogen convergence charging station.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction will operate the Siheung City Clean Energy Center, the first private investment-type integrated biogasification project in Korea, for 20 years after its completion in June this year. This facility can integrate and process 145 tons of food waste, 540 tons of sewage sludge, and 60 tons of manure daily to convert them into energy.
