Ulleungdo and Dokdo National Geopark Superior to 'Santorini'
On the 14th, Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, held the ‘2024 Ulleungdo·Dokdo National Geopark Guide Meeting’ at the first conference room of the county office.
Ulleungdo·Dokdo National Geopark was certified as Korea’s first national geopark on December 27, 2012, and has trained a total of 32 geopark guides. Over the past six years (`18?`23), an impressive 173,386 visitors have received guided tours from these guides.
Currently, 23 guides provide interpretation services to visitors of the geopark, and as a result, in August 2023, the National Geopark Office conducted a recognition vote in which Ulleungdo·Dokdo achieved second place with 51.6% of the votes in this category.
At the meeting, Ulleung-gun emphasized that the image of the guides directly reflects the image of Ulleungdo and Dokdo, highlighting the importance of the guides’ image through explanations of the ‘2023 Key Achievements in Geopark Guide Operations’ and the ‘2024 Major Business Plans,’ and stated that they will continue to provide better services through education.
From March 15 to November 30 this year, free interpretation services will be offered at five national geopark visitor centers near Nari, Sadong, Bongrae Waterfall, Gwaneumdo, and Taeha, covering 23 geological sites of Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
Nam Han-kwon, the county governor, expressed his gratitude for the hard work of the geopark guides, saying, “Let us work together to nurture and develop the Ulleungdo·Dokdo Geopark, our natural heritage that surpasses even Greece’s Santorini, and make it a world-class park.”
