Lee Jun-seok, Reform New Party Leader, Responds to Lee Jong-seop's Departure Controversy

"President Who Fled Must Be Judged"

Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reform New Party, commented on June 16 regarding the controversy over the appointment and departure of former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop, who is under investigation for alleged interference in the probe of a Marine Corps member's death, saying, "The president who allowed (this ambassador) to escape is also at fault," and added, "Isn't it right that he must be held accountable?"

At the opening ceremony of the campaign office for Jo Eung-cheon, candidate for Namyangju Gap, Gyeonggi Province, Lee said, "Is it even reasonable for a three-star general who served as Minister of National Defense to be appointed as an ambassador and flee while his subordinate suffers through a trial in court?"

He stated, "President Yoon Seok-yeol, who as a prosecutor confronted power to correct wrongdoings, is the same person who, when Colonel Park Jeong-hoon tried to properly investigate to resolve Chae Sang-byeong's difficulties, attempted to imprison him on charges of insubordination. This is President Yoon's self-contradiction."

He added, "Some say, 'Isn't Lee Jun-seok betraying from within?' This is not internal betrayal; look at what President Yoon is doing. Someone has to point this out."

He continued, "Although President Yoon and Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, may seem strong now, they are like a full moon. Over time, they inevitably wane," and said, "The Reform New Party and Lee Jun-seok will be like a crescent moon gradually waxing into a full moon."
