On the 15th (local time), Pence said in an interview with Fox News, "It should come as no surprise that I am not supporting Donald Trump this year."

He stated, "Trump is pursuing and clearly expressing an agenda that conflicts with the conservative agenda we have dealt with for the past four years," adding, "This is why I cannot, in good conscience, support Trump in this election campaign."

Having served as vice president under the Trump administration, he broke with Trump after refusing the former president's demand to overturn the 2020 election defeat.

On January 6, 2021, despite Trump supporters rioting at the Capitol, former Vice President Pence presided over the joint session of Congress certifying President Joe Biden's victory, enabling the transfer of power. Because of this, he was branded a traitor by Trump supporters.
