‘Traffic Fatality Prevention Working Council’ Held by Busan Autonomous Police Committee, City, and National Police Agency

Joint Traffic Fatality Prevention Working Council at 3 PM on the 14th

Discussion on Causes of Traffic Fatalities and Citizen Safety Threats

The Busan Autonomous Police Committee held a joint working-level meeting with Busan City and the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency at 3 p.m. on the 14th in the Autonomous Police Committee’s conference room to prevent traffic fatality accidents.

‘Traffic Fatality Prevention Working Council’ Held by Busan Autonomous Police Committee, City, and National Police Agency Practical Council for the Prevention of Traffic Fatal Accidents.

This working-level meeting was organized to analyze the main factors of traffic fatality accidents and discuss proactive response measures.

At the meeting, the causes of traffic fatality accidents, which occur due to complex factors, were analyzed together, and reduction measures for the main causes (elderly and pedestrians) were addressed.

Since the proportion of traffic fatality accidents occurring in Busan is concentrated among the elderly and pedestrians, the issues were diagnosed and proactive countermeasures were discussed to reduce the occurrence rate in the first half of the year.

Busan is the only metropolitan (special) city-level area that has entered a super-aged society, with the proportion of elderly people increasing every year. Although the total number of traffic fatalities in the city has decreased compared to the previous year, the proportion of elderly among all fatalities accounts for 46%, which is pointed out as a factor slowing down the reduction rate of traffic fatality accidents in Busan.

Additionally, discussions were held on diagnosing the regional safety index, preparing countermeasures, and changing citizens’ awareness through large-scale promotional activities in the first half of the year, as well as on major factors threatening citizen safety (such as illegal motorcycles).

The city plans to actively promote improvements to traffic safety facilities and the expansion of unmanned traffic enforcement equipment regarding vulnerable pedestrians and traffic enforcement CCTV, which are major factors in the decline of the regional safety index.

The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency will focus on safety education for the transportation industry, public service advertisements, campaigns, and production of community-based promotional materials in the first half of the year. Since 2022, joint crackdowns on illegal motorcycles with related organizations have received strong public support, and they plan to continue strong enforcement.

Jung Yong-hwan, chairman of the city’s Autonomous Police Committee, stated, “Safety for the elderly is more important than anything else as Busan enters a super-aged society,” and added, “Our committee will devote all efforts to traffic safety prevention activities and proactive responses through active cooperation with related organizations to make Busan a traffic safety city.”
