Residents Unite at Gangdong-gu Meeting on the 14th: Early Construction, Partial Opening of Seoul Section
Targeting 2026 Construction Start... Active Coordination with Gyeonggi-do and Seoul for Swift Project Progress
The atmosphere was intense at the 'Line 9 Phase 4 Additional Extension Project Resident Briefing Session' held on the 14th at the Gangdong-gu Municipal Gangdong Youth Center.
In particular, Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) has been striving to expand the transportation network in anticipation of a sharp increase in traffic demand due to large-scale reconstruction and redevelopment as well as the development of business complexes such as Godeok Biz Valley. Residents' voices demanding traffic measures are also growing louder.
The 'Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line Construction Project (Urban Railway Line 9 Phase 4 Additional Extension Project),' which extends Seoul Subway Line 9 to Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, is gaining momentum. The competent authority, Gyeonggi Province, plans to complete the basic plan by the second half of this year and begin construction in 2026.
The Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line is a railway construction project with a total length of 17.6 km connecting Seoul's Gangdong-gu, Hanam Misa Riverside City, and Namyangju Wangsuk New Town and Jinjeop 2 District. It is the fifth phase extension following the fourth phase, which extended the eastern terminus of Line 9 to Godeok-Gangil 1 District in Gangdong, Seoul.
Through this project, a total of eight stations will be newly established, including one in Gangil-dong, Seoul.
On the 13th, Gyeonggi Province held a public hearing and resident briefing session in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, and on the 14th, resident briefing sessions were held in Gangdong-gu and Hanam City respectively.
During these sessions, explanations were provided on ▲detailed route plans and extensions ▲station and vehicle depot plans ▲types of railway vehicles and operation plans, including the basic plan (draft) for the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line ▲and the draft strategic environmental impact assessment, while collecting residents' opinions.
Residents of Gangil-dong who attended the briefing session held in Gangdong-gu urged the need to improve public transportation infrastructure, actively requesting Gyeonggi Province to expedite construction and to consider ▲early opening of the Seoul section ▲simultaneous operation of express and regular trains ▲and improved accessibility of station entrances.
Gyeonggi Province plans to carefully review the collected residents' opinions and apply for basic plan approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the first half of this year.
Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "We fully empathize with the transportation inconveniences experienced by residents and will actively consult with Gyeonggi Province and Seoul City to expedite the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line project and reflect residents' opinions." He added, "We will also spare no effort to connect the subway with village and city buses in response to the large-scale move-in to the Godeok-Gangil district."
Meanwhile, the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line construction project aims to receive the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's basic plan approval and announcement in the second half of this year after hearing opinions from the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly in April, proceed with detailed design, start construction in the first half of 2026, and complete it in the second half of 2031.
