Starting Tomorrow, Up to 500,000 KRW Switching Support for Mobile Number Portability Subscribers

Mobile carriers will start providing mobile phone number portability transition subsidies from Saturday, the 16th.

According to the Korea Communications Commission and the industry, major mobile carriers have completed preparations following the implementation of the number portability transition subsidy system, and actual payments will be possible starting on the 16th.

Mobile carriers have been rushing to complete IT system work to reflect the subsidies through policy consultations among manufacturers.

Previously, the KCC approved the enactment of the "Standards for Providing Number Portability Transition Subsidies When Changing Mobile Carriers" following the revision of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Improvement of Distribution Structure of Mobile Communication Devices (the "Mobile Device Distribution Act").

Accordingly, mobile carriers can autonomously provide transition subsidies up to 500,000 KRW to users who port their numbers, considering expected revenue, penalty fees, SIM card issuance costs, and loss of long-term subscription benefits.

To prevent confusion, the KCC is closely monitoring the market situation and taking prompt action by operating a Market Situation Inspection Team composed of the KCC, the three mobile carriers, and the Korea Information Society Development Institute.
