Regained consciousness and transported to hospital... No life-threatening condition

A man in his 20s who had lost consciousness and was bleeding from his face survived thanks to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed by a police officer on his way to work.

According to the police on the 14th, Kwon Young-cheol (58), a sergeant in the Crime Prevention Division of the Songpa Police Station in Seoul, witnessed a man in his 20s collapsed and unconscious in front of an architectural office in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu, at around 8:20 a.m. the previous day. The man regained and lost consciousness repeatedly, but Sergeant Kwon continued rescue efforts for about 15 minutes until the 119 emergency medical team arrived, helping him recover his breathing. Thanks to Sergeant Kwon’s quick response, the man regained consciousness and was transported to the nearby Samsung Seoul Hospital, where he received treatment safely. He is currently reported to be in stable condition. It is known that this man is a groom-to-be planning to get married this year. Sergeant Kwon said, "I feel rewarded to have saved a citizen with CPR that I had learned beforehand," and added, "I wish for the groom-to-be’s speedy recovery and good health."

Meanwhile, on the 7th, medical center staff saved a man in his 50s who collapsed on the roadside due to cardiac arrest by performing CPR. Around 4 p.m. on the 7th, Kim Dong-rok (35), a facility safety staff member, and Bok Hyun-soo (30), a member of the subsidiary business team at Chungnam Hongseong Medical Center, discovered a man in his 50s who had lost consciousness and collapsed due to cardiac arrest while riding bicycles near the medical center. Seeing this, Kim and others recalled the CPR training they had received at work. While Bok checked the patient’s condition, Kim performed CPR and waited for the ambulance. The man later received hospital treatment and has since been discharged and is recovering. Kim Dong-rok told Yonhap News, "The CPR training was very helpful in a real situation," and added, "I am really glad to have been able to help someone in an emergency."

More than 30,000 people collapse from cardiac arrest every year in South Korea. Knowing how to perform CPR can save the precious lives of cardiac arrest patients who suddenly occur nearby. Emergency treatment education, including CPR, is provided by local government health centers, fire stations, and branches of the Korean Red Cross.
