Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival to Become a Global Festival... Government to Support with 2 Billion Won Over 3 Years

The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, representing Suwon in Gyeonggi Province, has been selected as a ‘2024~2026 Global Festival’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and will receive an annual support of 660 million KRW for the next three years.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism previously conducted a ‘Global Festival Contest Project’ to select promising festivals and nurture them into festivals visited by people worldwide, selecting one festival each in three categories: ▲Performing Arts ▲Traditional Culture ▲Tourism Resources. The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival was selected in the ‘Traditional Culture’ category.

Suwon City will form a ‘Global Festival Council’ jointly with Incheon City and Hwacheon County, which were also selected in this contest project, to share strategies for attracting foreign tourists and jointly plan promotional and marketing events until 2026.

An official from Suwon City stated, "Suwon is close to an international airport and has the conditions to accommodate foreign tourists," adding, "We will do our best in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization to make the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival a global festival representing South Korea."

The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival began in October 1964 as the ‘Hwahoong Cultural Festival’ and is now in its 61st year as a representative festival of Gyeonggi Province. It is a cultural festival honoring Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and King Jeongjo’s reform ideals. When Suwon Hwaseong was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997, the festival’s name was changed to Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival in 1999, continuing to the present day.

Meanwhile, this year’s Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival will be held from October 4 to 6 around Suwon Hwaseong.
