Operation of Bicycle Insurance Until March Next Year
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that it will operate bicycle insurance this year to reduce the financial burden on citizens who have suffered damages from bicycle accidents.
Yongin citizen bicycle insurance automatically covers all residents registered in the city, regardless of gender, occupation, or medical history. Foreigners are also included.
The coverage includes accidents that occur while directly riding a bicycle, accidents that happen while riding as a passenger on the back seat without driving, and accidents involving collisions with bicycles while walking. Coverage applies not only to accidents in Yongin but also those occurring in other regions.
The main coverage details include 10 million KRW in case of death due to a bicycle accident, up to 10 million KRW for permanent disability, and consolation payments ranging from 160,000 to 480,000 KRW for cases requiring treatment for more than four weeks.
The enrollment period is until March 10 of next year. Insurance benefits apply only to accidents occurring while riding a bicycle, and claims can be made within three years from the date of the accident.
In case of a bicycle accident, submitting a claim form along with a copy of the resident registration, ID card, medical certificate, and hospitalization confirmation will allow for compensation after review.
A city official stated, "We will do our best to create an environment where citizens can use bicycles with peace of mind."
Previously, the city has operated bicycle insurance since 2016 and paid a total of 1.22525 billion KRW in insurance claims up to last year. In the previous year, 190 people received a total of 83.6 million KRW in insurance payments due to bicycle accidents.
