Park Hee-young, Yongsan District Mayor, Attends Entrance Ceremony of Veterans Welfare and Culture University Seoul Campus

On the 12th, Park Hee-young, the mayor of Yongsan-gu, Seoul, attended the entrance ceremony of the Veterans Welfare and Culture University Seoul Campus, hosted by the Republic of Korea Veterans Association and organized by the Veterans Welfare and Culture University Seoul Branch.

The entrance ceremony was held at 10:20 a.m. in the Dream Tree Theater on the 5th floor of the Yongsan Dream Tree Complex Town. About 50 students and other guests attended the event, adding to the occasion.

The 2024 Veterans Welfare and Culture University Seoul Campus will be held every Tuesday from the 19th of this month until December at the Yongsan Veterans Hall (Bogwang-ro 60-gil 14-9). Classes will be suspended during July and August for the summer break, and a graduation ceremony will be held in December.

Park Hee-young, mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “Our district is committed to creating a community where national veterans receive proper respect,” adding, “Since the Veterans Welfare and Culture University will be operated at the Yongsan Veterans Hall this year, we will provide full support.”

This year, the district will support funeral services for national veterans for the first time. Starting next month, when a national veteran passes away, the bereaved family will be provided with condolence flags worth about 300,000 KRW, portrait baskets, and convenience items for the family.

In addition, every year at the end of February, a Taegeukgi Street is created near Hyochang Park to commemorate Samiljeol (March 1st Movement Day). Throughout the year, the district operates priority parking spaces for veterans at the Veterans Hall, provides protocol and respect for heads of veterans organizations during major events, and supports the operation of veterans organizations.

The district’s Veterans Hall is located a 5-minute walk from Itaewon Station on Subway Line 6. It houses offices for nine veterans organizations and includes facilities such as a fitness room, lounge, meeting rooms, and a multipurpose auditorium.

As of March 2024, there are a total of 2,442 national veterans registered as residents in the area. The breakdown is as follows: 833 recipients of military merit awards, 647 Vietnam War veterans, 336 injured or disabled veterans, 272 bereaved families of fallen soldiers, 253 Korean War veterans, 254 widows of fallen soldiers, 143 victims of Agent Orange aftereffects, 76 patriotic martyrs and independence activists, and 11 special mission veterans.
