Gangbuk-gu Installs Illegal Dumping Surveillance Cameras at 60 Vulnerable Sites

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) rolled up its sleeves to tackle illegal dumping of garbage, resulting in a significant decrease in related complaints.

The targets for illegal dumping surveillance include cigarette butts, plastic bags discarded on streets and alleys, general trash bags containing household waste, and volume-based waste bags mixed with food waste that have not been properly separated for recycling.

The district is continuously conducting prevention and publicity activities tailored to local conditions in cooperation with 13 community service centers. Volunteer groups in each neighborhood hold Clean Days to clean in front of their homes, and 378 CCTV cameras and 39 logo projectors have been installed in areas vulnerable to illegal dumping.

Additionally, to strengthen surveillance and publicity against illegal dumping, three promotional electronic display boards have been installed, and three inspection teams, each composed of two members, are operating to promptly handle on-site complaints.

As a result, a total of 2,749 cases of illegal dumping were cracked down on last year, and fines totaling 95.79 million KRW were imposed. In particular, 68 surveillance cameras were installed in 60 vulnerable areas, leading to a decrease in illegal dumping and on-site complaints. Meanwhile, fines ranging from 50,000 to 1,000,000 KRW are imposed when illegal dumping is detected.

This year, the district plans to expand the installation of 30 CCTV cameras each in vulnerable and high-complaint areas in each neighborhood to realize a clean and dignified city.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "Illegal dumping of garbage is a bad habit that harms the environment around us, damages relationships with neighbors, and lowers the image and residential environment quality of the area. We will continue to do our best to create a clean and pleasant city that empowers our lives."
