Creating a Plaza at the Danghyeoncheon~Jungnangcheon Confluence with Stylish Rest Facilities
New Projects at Key Points of Jungnangcheon, Danghyeoncheon, and Uicheon Enhance Waterfront Spaces
Utilizing Green Spaces and Rivers to Bring 'Healing Spots' Closer Across the City
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced plans to significantly expand healing spots utilizing the natural scenery of rivers.
According to the 2023 big data urban leisure population analysis conducted last year by the district in collaboration with Korea University Digital Innovation Research Center and KT, Nowon-gu's urban leisure population reached 93.58 million (annual cumulative), with riverside areas being the most preferred zones, surpassing station areas, parks, and markets.
In particular, the population enjoying leisure activities in river areas increased by 7.7% compared to the previous year, highlighting the importance of riverside utilization as a key factor influencing the quality of residents' leisure life.
While the district has focused on creating healing spots centered around green spaces such as Bulamsan and Suraksan Mountains, starting this year, it will shift its focus to utilizing four rivers within the region.
First, the district will redevelop the 'Meeting Plaza' at the confluence of Jungnangcheon and Danghyeoncheon, the area's representative rivers, to provide convenience facilities and resting shelters.
Utilizing approximately 1,979㎡ of green space on the upper part of the retaining wall adjacent to Dongbu Expressway, which currently disrupts the landscape, a two-story ▲rest area equipped with a convenience store will be created, significantly expanding resting spaces.
The rest area will also feature an observatory, which the district expects to become a popular spot for visitors. Solar power facilities will be installed on the observatory roof to maximize the functionality of the idle space.
The existing retaining wall will be demolished and refurbished, adding aesthetic functions to the river through murals and lighting installations. Along the riverbank adjacent to the wall, about 100 meters of ▲terraced waterfront stands will be maintained to allow visitors to enjoy relaxing 'mulmeong' (water gazing).
Additionally, on Jungnangcheon, the largest river in the area, a ▲bridge fountain observatory will be installed on the Gyeongchun Railway Bridge in connection with the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail extension project. On Uicheon, a project to create a waterfront vitality hub and resting space on idle land along the river embankment is also being promoted simultaneously.
Furthermore, to enhance the overall utilization and appeal of Danghyeoncheon, the district plans to sequentially implement ▲extension of the walking trail from Danggogae Entrance Five-way Intersection to Danggogae Station, ▲creation of waterfront-friendly spaces such as a waterside cafe near the floor fountain by Seongseo University, and ▲expansion of the musical fountain near Nowon Mathematics Culture Center.
Meanwhile, the district has made various efforts to promote leisure activities utilizing rivers. Along Danghyeoncheon, a representative local river, annual cultural festivals such as the light festival 'Nowon Moonlight Walk,' 'Danghyeoncheon Water Music Concert,' and 'Musical Fountain' have been held, providing enjoyable experiences while walking. At the covered section near Sanggye Station, the artistic space 'Danghyeon Bitgil,' where water and light flow, has been created, and the walking trail has been continuously maintained with unique sculptures and landscaping, including the 'Europe Travel Themed Flowerbed.'
In January, to systematically promote various projects for creating a waterfront emotional city, the district reorganized its organization and established a dedicated Waterfront Management Team within the Flood Control Division.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Providing residents with more wonderful and enjoyable ways to cultivate daily life by utilizing nature is a way to enhance the value of the city.” He added, “We will focus on promoting projects that allow healing throughout the neighborhood centered on the four mountains (Suraksan, Bulamsan, Choansan, Yeongchuksan) and four rivers (Jungnangcheon, Danghyeoncheon, Uicheon, Mukdongcheon) in Nowon-gu.”
