Gwanak-gu Begins Maintenance of Aged and Defective Sewers to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall

Recently, during the thawing season and periods of heavy summer rain, ground subsidence and flooding damage have frequently occurred, causing citizens to feel anxious and experience inconvenience.

Accordingly, the need for maintenance of aging sewer pipelines has become even greater.

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Junhee) has begun maintenance of aging sewer pipelines that are over 30 years old to prevent damage caused by heavy summer rain and to ensure the safety of residents.

Last year, the district first repaired a total of 8.4 km of deteriorated and defective sewer pipelines selected through its own investigation and review by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

This year, with a total budget of 13.1 billion KRW, 8.0 km of sewer pipelines in 12 neighborhoods including Nakseongdae-dong have been selected, and full-scale maintenance will begin this month.

First, the district will improve 6.7 km of aging or defective sewer pipelines in areas such as Gwanak-ro 6-gil and Sillim-ro 21-gil.

Additionally, 1.3 km of sewer pipelines in areas where excavation is impossible due to underground installations, such as Gwanak-ro 30-gil and around Bongcheon Station, will be carefully maintained using trenchless sewer repair methods.

Along with this, sewer facilities requiring prompt maintenance, such as aging manholes and rainwater inlets, will be actively repaired and reinforced to increase water flow capacity and safely protect residents from flooding damage and road subsidence.

The district expects that this aging sewer pipeline maintenance project will prevent damage caused by flooding and road subsidence, solve odor problems, and allow residents to spend a comfortable and safe summer season.

District Mayor Park Junhee said, “Maintenance of aging and defective sewer pipelines is a project that must be carried out for the safety of residents, so we ask for a little understanding from residents even if they experience inconvenience during the construction period,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to make ‘Gwanak, a city safe for residents’ through systematic and proactive sewer management.”
