Fostering Green Leaders through Environmental Education Field Trips for Local Elementary, Middle, High School Students and Adults
Visits to Key Environmental Facilities such as Incineration-Free Stores, Mapo Resource Recovery Facility, and Seoul Energy Dream Center
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will operate the 'Mapo Environmental School,' an environmental education field trip program for practicing carbon-neutral living, from April to November.
Last year, the 'Mapo Environmental School,' which started its first class targeting 4th to 6th grade elementary students in the region, received enthusiastic reviews by nurturing 340 children as Green Leaders over a total of 17 sessions.
Encouraged by the positive response, Mapo-gu expanded the participation target of the Mapo Environmental School this year to include middle and high school students as well as local residents, and increased the number of field trip courses from 2 to 4.
The Environmental School’s field trip program is conducted under the guidance of Environmental School teachers, beginning with a visit to 'Sogak Zero Gage,' the first local government intermediate recycling processing facility located in the plaza of Mapo-gu Office, followed by visits to the designated field trip sites according to each course.
Courses A and B are morning programs aimed at local elementary students. Students participating in Course A visit the Seoul Energy Dream Center, a self-sufficient energy building, and the Mapo Resource Recovery Facility, while those in Course B visit the Nanji Waterside Ecological Learning Center.
Course C, held in the afternoon, is for middle and high school students and adults. Participants visit Energyum, the promotional exhibition hall of Korea Midland Power’s Seoul Power Headquarters, where they can see the 90-year history of Seoul Thermal Power Plant and the electricity generation process, and experience cutting-edge VR (Virtual Reality) and media art firsthand.
Course D is an afternoon program for adults, with the same detailed schedule as Course A.
Mapo-gu plans to recruit applicants for the Mapo Environmental School through local schools and community service centers until the 22nd of this month.
Additionally, to raise awareness of environmental issues from an early age and cultivate practical habits for environmental protection, a Mapo Environmental School program for daycare children will also be operated.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “I believe that seeing and experiencing directly is more important than a hundred words, which is why we operate the field trip program, Mapo Environmental School. Mapo-gu will continue to do its best to spread awareness of environmental preservation and to ensure that waste reduction and resource recycling are practiced.”
