LH, Korea Ceramic Technology Institute, and Defense Technology Quality Institute Visit
Discussing Close Cooperation Plans
Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, visited LH, the Korea Ceramic Technology Institute, and the Defense Technology Quality Institute to discuss opinions and explore mutual cooperation measures for the establishment of the Changwon Defense and Nuclear Convergence National Industrial Complex (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Changwon New National Industrial Complex’) through meetings with the heads of these organizations.
The Changwon New National Industrial Complex is the only candidate site in Gyeongnam among the 15 new national industrial complex candidate sites selected by the government on March 15 last year.
Unlike existing industrial complexes that mainly consist of factory clusters, it is planned to be developed as a new-concept industrial complex integrating industry, academia, and research infrastructure, centered on the defense and nuclear industries, which are core industries of the Changwon economy.
The government currently aims to approve the industrial complex plan for the new national industrial complex candidate sites by 2026.
Through the pan-government promotion support team meetings, various regulatory obstacles hindering project progress are being resolved, and rapid administrative procedures are being devised.
Cooperation is planned to ensure that preliminary feasibility studies are conducted for all new national industrial complex candidate sites within this year.
The Changwon Special City is fully committed to recruiting tenant companies and securing demand to expedite the preliminary feasibility study for the Changwon New National Industrial Complex.
Together with Gyeongsangnam-do Province, it is actively responding to regulatory improvements necessary for the establishment of the Changwon New National Industrial Complex targeting government ministries.
On the 11th, Mayor Hong visited LH, the project implementer for the new national industrial complex, to seek ways to accelerate the project and create a more competitive Changwon New National Industrial Complex, holding a meeting with President Lee Hanjun and other executives.
It was agreed that Changwon Special City and LH will closely cooperate to ensure the swift implementation and approval of the preliminary feasibility study for the Changwon New National Industrial Complex.
Following this, Mayor Hong visited the Korea Ceramic Technology Institute and met with Director Jeong Yeongil to discuss ways to foster industries based on ceramics, essential materials in future industries such as aerospace and hydrogen, and agreed to strengthen cooperation between Changwon Special City and the Korea Ceramic Technology Institute.
During his visit to the Defense Technology Quality Institute, Mayor Hong met with Director Heo Geonyeong and listened to the institute’s major projects.
They held in-depth discussions on how to promote the localization research and development of key components for major weapons, which are core to the defense industry in the Changwon New National Industrial Complex, and discussed cooperation measures for the development of the complex.
Mayor Hong stated, “The New National Industrial Complex is a core base of the Changwon economy that will be responsible for the next 50 years of Changwon’s future. Therefore, I visited several related organizations to seek ways to rapidly advance the project and promote linked development with various advanced industries centered on defense and nuclear industries.” He added, “Having confirmed the deep interest and willingness to cooperate from the heads of related organizations for the establishment and development of the Changwon New National Industrial Complex, we will do our best to ensure that the project proceeds swiftly and smoothly based on their cooperation.”
