Jeonnam Autonomous Police to Strengthen Year-Round Drunk Driving Crackdown Until Year-End... Undercover Patrol Cars Also Deployed

Year-Round Intensive Crackdowns and Undercover Patrols by Location

Installation of Checkpoints in High-Risk Areas to Prevent Cargo Truck Accidents

The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee is strengthening customized crackdowns tailored to situations such as drunk driving enforcement, speeding and signal violations, and cargo truck traffic accidents.

According to the Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee on the 12th, the number of traffic accident fatalities in the Jeonnam region last year was 226. This is an 11.9% increase compared to 2022.

In a related autonomous police security policy survey, residents identified 'drunk driving' and 'speeding and signal violations' as the factors they feel most threaten traffic safety.

The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee and Jeonnam Police Agency have decided to strengthen year-round drunk driving enforcement and operate undercover patrol cars from this month until the end of the year.

They will conduct comprehensive crackdowns regardless of day or night at vulnerable locations for drinking such as entertainment districts, restaurants, and recreational golf courses at least once a week, and each police station will strengthen customized self-enforcement at accident-prone locations at least twice a week.

In addition, education and publicity will be conducted to raise awareness focusing on laws and cases related to strengthened drunk driving penalties.

The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee and Jeonnam Police Agency are also promoting measures to strengthen cargo truck traffic safety due to growing concerns over major accidents caused by cargo truck safety negligence, such as a fatal accident recently caused by a wheel detaching from a poorly maintained cargo truck on the Gyeongbu Expressway.

In Jeonnam, last year there were 80 cargo truck-related traffic fatalities, an increase of 26 compared to the previous year. The cause of accidents was mostly due to failure to comply with safe driving, such as inattentive forward observation, accounting for 81.3%.

This measure includes visible safety management through enforcement of major traffic law violations, customized education and publicity for cargo trucks, and improvements through inspection of vulnerable traffic environments.

Accordingly, by analyzing data from the Digital Tachograph (DTG) that records driving data, 10 dangerous sections where risky driving repeatedly occurs will be selected by March, and mobile enforcement booths will be installed in the first half of this year to continuously crack down on cargo truck violations such as crossing the center line and speeding.

Along with this, to prevent pedestrian accidents, factors causing accidents such as compliance with pedestrian protection obligations during right turns in urban areas will be intensively managed, and traffic safety threats such as cargo truck overloading or structural modifications will be cracked down on in cooperation with related agencies.

Regarding school violence, with an expected increase at the start of the new semester, the roles of dedicated investigators and School Police Officers (SPO) will be expanded through improvements in the 'School Violence Case Handling System,' enabling proactive and preemptive prevention and response to school violence.

Jo Man-hyung, Chairman of the Provincial Autonomous Police Committee, said, “At a time when traffic safety is a concern due to the thaw season and other factors, we will strengthen traffic safety activities by cooperating with related agencies to take preventive measures in advance to ensure the peaceful daily lives of residents.”
