Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced on the 11th (local time) that he plans to release the source code of the AI chatbot 'Grok'.
On the same day, Musk CEO stated on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "xAI will open source Grok this week."
xAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) startup founded by Musk CEO in July last year. Grok is an AI chatbot released by xAI in November last year. It operates similarly to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The plan is to make Grok's source code public so that anyone can use it.
The release of Grok's source code appears to be aimed at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Previously, Musk CEO filed a lawsuit demanding that OpenAI and CEO Altman cease commercial operations and release AI technology as open source.
Musk CEO claimed that in 2015, he accepted a proposal from Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman to create a nonprofit research institute to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity and to release AGI technology as open source. He criticized, "In reality, OpenAI has transformed into a closed-source entity and effectively a subsidiary of Microsoft (MS), the world's largest tech company."
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) interpreted Musk's open-sourcing as potentially having commercial motives. WSJ stated, "It is unclear which parts of Grok will be released for free, but the open-source version can essentially serve as marketing because developers can access it more quickly when they want to test the model." It added, "Also, feedback and improvements from the developer community on the open version of Grok can help accelerate the development of new versions of xAI."
