Suncheon City Expands Development of Resident-Managed Shared Parking Lots

Parking Convenience, Landscape Improvement, Owner Property Tax Exemption, etc.

Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) is receiving great response from residents by utilizing vacant lots to create resident-led shared parking lots to address the shortage of parking spaces in urban areas.

The Suncheon City resident-led shared parking lot project involves obtaining land use consent from the owners of vacant urban lots to create shared parking lots, and exempting the landowners from property tax.

Since 2011, a total of 121 sites with 1,924 parking spaces have been created in areas such as Ocheon-dong, Yeonhyang-dong, and Sindae District, and are open to residents free of charge.

Constructing parking lots in urban areas requires a budget of about 50 million KRW per parking space, including land acquisition costs, which limits the expansion of parking lots. However, shared parking lots can be created at a cost of 500,000 KRW per space, resulting in significant budget savings.

Additionally, by creating shared parking lots on vacant lots within the city that are used for cultivation or accumulate a lot of household waste, there is also an environmental cleanup effect, earning positive evaluations from nearby residents.

An official from the city stated, “Simply providing vacant lots in the city as shared parking lots can contribute to alleviating urban parking difficulties,” and added, “We hope for much interest and participation from citizens in the creation of resident-led shared parking lots.”
