Yongin, a "City of Avid Readers"... 6 Consecutive Years as Gyeonggi-do's Top Book Borrowing City

6.02 Million Loans Last Year... Suji Library 900,000 Books
Top in Library Users and Material Purchase Costs Too

'6.02 million volumes.' This is the number of books borrowed over one year from 19 public libraries in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do.


On the 11th, according to Gyeonggi-do and Yongin-si, Yongin-si has ranked first in book loans among local governments in Gyeonggi-do for six consecutive years.

In last year's operational performance evaluation conducted by Gyeonggi-do on 319 public libraries, including 308 local governments and 11 education offices within the province, across six areas and 25 items such as collection materials, facilities and equipment, usage, and users, Yongin-si recorded a total of 6,021,903 book loans, securing first place.


Among individual libraries, Suji Library ranked first with 900,000 loans. Additionally, among Yongin-si's 19 public libraries, 12 libraries ranked within the top 50, including ▲Sanghyeon Library (570,000 loans, 6th) ▲Jukjeon Library (490,000 loans, 11th) ▲Dongbaek Library (460,000 loans, 15th) ▲Giheung Library (460,000 loans, 16th).


The city also added that it ranked first in the province in terms of library users, materials purchase expenses, and the number of smart libraries.


In fact, the city is implementing various policies to promote a reading culture. Representative initiatives include the 'Immediate Loan System,' which allows citizens to borrow desired books directly from bookstores; the 'Hope Book Service,' which purchases requested books; the 'Interlibrary Loan Service,' enabling borrowing books from other libraries at nearby libraries; and 'Smart Libraries,' which allow unmanned book borrowing and returning 365 days a year.


Lee Sang-il, mayor of Yongin-si, said, "We will continue to expand the collection and improve citizens' access to libraries to further promote the reading culture."
