260 Billion Won Invested to Enhance Safety in Crime-Prone Areas
235 Outdated Cameras Also Replaced
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 10th that it will invest 2.6 billion KRW this year to newly install 300 security CCTVs in 75 crime-vulnerable areas and replace 235 outdated CCTVs.
The new CCTV installations will be in crime-prone areas such as residential neighborhoods, school routes, alleys, parks, and major roads. The target installation areas were selected in consultation with the police station, considering citizens' opinions and crime occurrence data.
In addition, 235 outdated CCTVs will be replaced with ultra-high-definition CCTVs. LED signboards indicating CCTV operation during late-night hours will also be installed at these locations.
The city also plans to additionally install smart method CCTVs applying AI technology in 17 crime-vulnerable locations such as hiking trails and underpasses of highways (commonly called 'Tokkigul').
Meanwhile, Yongin City currently operates 11,020 security CCTVs installed in 2,549 locations within the jurisdiction. CCTV footage is directly managed at the 'CCTV Integrated Control Center' located on the 10th floor of the city hall. The center employs a total of 37 personnel, including control operators, police officers, and public officials, working 24/7 throughout the year.
Last year, the city used security CCTVs to identify and take action on 107 intoxicated persons and homeless individuals, and responded to 850 cases including property damage, traffic accidents, assault and theft, emergency bell calls, and various incidents and civil complaints.
A city official stated, "We will strive to discover crime-vulnerable areas and expand CCTV installations so that citizens can live more safely."
