On the 8th, Gwanak-gu Office held the 116th Anniversary Event of International Women's Day with about 100 participants including women's groups and residents... 16 individuals honored for contributions to women's rights, gender sensitivity lecture, and various side events to share the significance of International Women's Day with residents
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) held a commemorative event on the 8th to mark the 116th anniversary of International Women's Day under the theme "Inspire Inclusion (#InspireInclusion)."
International Women's Day commemorates the large-scale protest on March 8, 1908, when over 15,000 female textile workers in New York, USA, demanded survival rights and suffrage.
The United Nations (UN) designated this day as an official observance in 1975 to promote the status of women, and South Korea officially designated Women's Day as a legal holiday in 2018 by amending the Framework Act on Gender Equality, marking the first time in 43 years.
This event was co-hosted by the district office and the 'Women's Subcommittee' of the Gwanak-gu Community Security Council, with about 100 participants including related organizations, local women's group members, and residents, successfully concluding the event.
To convey the significance of International Women's Day to residents, the district began by screening an introductory video about Women's Day produced by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. Mayor Park Jun-hee of Gwanak-gu presented certificates of appreciation to 16 individuals who contributed to the advancement of women's rights and human rights protection, offering congratulatory remarks.
Additionally, the district invited broadcaster Lee Jung-soo, who has been active as a comedian on KBS's 'Gag Concert' and SBS's 'People Who Find Laughter,' to share a session with residents on the topic "The Secret to Turning My Surroundings into a Flower Garden," discussing gender sensitivity.
Furthermore, the district organized various side events such as a campaign to prevent violence against women, sales and exhibitions of products from the joint workshop 'Bombom' for female victims of violence, introducing diverse activities aimed at enhancing women's rights to the residents.
In particular, the district held an exhibition commemorating the publication of the 'Gwanak Her Story Book' released in January, which received great response from residents by highlighting the history of women in Gwanak. The Gwanak Her Story Book is the second edition of a beautifully preserved oral history book documenting the footprints of women who contributed to the local community in Gwanak-gu.
Mayor Park Jun-hee of Gwanak-gu said, "I congratulate everyone on the 116th anniversary of International Women's Day, and just like the slogan of International Women's Day, 'Inspire Inclusion!', we will do our best to create a Gwanak-gu that leads the realization of a gender-equal society based on the value of inclusion."
