Conversion of 307 'Women-Only Parking Spaces' to 'Family-Friendly Parking Spaces' by Mid-Year
Supporting Transportation-Vulnerable Groups Including Pregnant Women, Infants, and the Elderly in Response to Low Birthrate and Aging Society
Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) is taking full-scale steps to create ‘Family-Friendly Parking Lots’ for residents in response to the low birthrate and aging society.
To this end, the district partially amended the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Government Gwanak-gu Parking Lot Installation and Management Ordinance’ on February 15 to lay the groundwork for establishing family-friendly parking lots.
In this amendment, the district converted the existing installation standards for women-priority parking spaces into installation standards for family-friendly parking spaces. The scope of users for the former women-priority parking spaces was expanded to allow more transportation-vulnerable groups to conveniently get on and off vehicles.
The eligible users include pregnant women, infants and young children, the elderly, or those accompanying them. The installation targets for family-friendly parking spaces are public parking lots, government-operated parking lots, and private parking lots with 30 or more parking spaces where women-priority parking spaces are installed. The installation ratio is at least 10% of the total parking spaces.
The parking space lines will be marked with a white background and solid lines in Kkotdam Hwangto color (a traditional Korean yellow earth color). Pictograms and the words ‘Family-Friendly Parking Lot’ will also be displayed in solid Kkotdam Hwangto lines. However, for private parking lots that do not yet have family-friendly parking spaces, the existing women-priority parking spaces will be regarded as family-friendly parking spaces according to the related supplementary provisions.
Family-friendly parking lots will be installed in locations that are ▲bright and free of corners ▲close to parking lot entrances, elevators, and stairs to ensure accessibility, mobility, and safety ▲easily monitored by closed-circuit television (CCTV) and frequently trafficked ▲adjacent to parking spaces exclusively for the disabled, thereby securing convenience and safety for transportation-vulnerable groups.
The district plans to convert 20 women-priority parking lots, approximately 307 spaces, within public parking lots into family-friendly parking lots by the first half of this year.
Thereafter, the district will strengthen guidance and promotion for private parking lots to gradually expand family-friendly parking lots.
A district official said, “We expect that the creation of family-friendly parking lots will enable transportation-vulnerable groups to use safe and convenient parking services,” adding, “We will do our best to create a pleasant parking environment where families can be happy in response to the low birthrate and aging society.”
