'Dragon Ball' Manga Artist Toriyama Akira Passes Away at 68 Years Old

Akira Toriyama (68), a famous Japanese manga artist known for works such as "Dragon Ball" and "Dr. Slump," has passed away.

According to local media including NHK on the 8th, Akira Toriyama died on the 1st due to acute subdural hematoma.


The Akira Toriyama Studio announced the news of his passing, stating, "He had work he was dedicated to and many things he still wanted to achieve. It is truly regrettable."


The studio added, "Thanks to the support of fans worldwide, Akira Toriyama was able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that his world of works will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time."


Regarding the funeral arrangements, they explained, "The deceased was quietly sent off by close relatives," and "In accordance with his wishes for peace, we decline condolences, incense offerings, and floral tributes."


The weekly magazine "Shonen Jump," where the deceased serialized his works for a long time, also expressed condolences through its official website on the same day, saying, "Akira Toriyama, who published many works in our magazine, has passed away. The manga he drew was read and loved worldwide beyond borders. The charming characters he created and his overwhelming design sense greatly influenced many manga artists and creators."


Born in 1955 in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, the deceased graduated from a technical high school specializing in design and drew manga. He debuted in 1978 by publishing a short manga in "Shonen Jump." Since then, he engaged in creative activities for over 45 years and was regarded as the most commercially successful manga artist in Japan.


It is known that the funeral was quietly held among family and relatives.
