Moorim Paper Achieves Industry-First 'Zero Waste Landfill' Gold Grade

Establishing a Position as a 'Resource Circulation-Oriented' Paper Mill

Murim announced on the 7th that it has become the first company in the domestic paper industry to receive the 'Gold' grade in the international verification of 'Zero Waste Landfill,' recognizing its high-level resource circulation system.

The Zero Waste Landfill verification is an inspection that evaluates a company's resource circulation efforts by investigating the recycling level of waste generated during the product manufacturing process. UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, conducts the assessment and awards Silver (recycling rate 90?94%), Gold (95?99%), and Platinum (100%) grades. Murim Paper's Jinju Plant, a core facility producing high-quality, high value-added paper, recycled most of the total waste generated and received the Gold grade, making it the only domestic paper company to do so.

Moorim Paper Achieves Industry-First 'Zero Waste Landfill' Gold Grade

Murim Paper's Jinju Plant has long sought eco-friendly waste treatment methods to practice resource circulation. Since 2014, in cooperation with recycling companies, it has recycled waste without landfill by using it as raw materials for soil conditioners, sawdust, concrete materials, etc., and the water used in the paper production process is filtered and reused instead of being discarded.

Moreover, a dedicated waste management organization has been separately established to pay special attention to waste management supervision. The plant monitors and manages the amount of waste generated in real-time every month and conducts thorough monitoring throughout the entire process from waste discharge to transportation and treatment by recycling companies to prevent any issues.

Building on the Gold grade achievement of Murim Paper's Jinju Plant, Murim plans to expand the Zero Waste Landfill verification to the 'Murim SP Daegu Plant' and 'Murim P&P Ulsan Plant.' Both sites have high waste recycling rates and excellent eco-friendly competitiveness, including factory operations using environmentally friendly fuels and production of resource-circulating paper products.

In fact, Murim P&P is the only domestic company producing pulp, the raw material for paper, and converts 'black liquor,' a biomass fuel generated in the pulp production process, into renewable energy such as electricity and steam for product manufacturing. Murim SP, a specialist in eco-friendly specialty paper, was the first in the paper industry to replace bunker C oil with liquefied natural gas (LNG), significantly reducing air pollutant emissions. Recently, it has also taken the lead in spreading eco-friendly paper by launching 'resource-circulating paper' made from discarded clothes.

Juban Sik, Plant Manager of Murim Paper Jinju Plant, said, “Our continuous efforts to reduce waste have culminated in receiving this Gold grade. Going forward, we will strengthen various resource circulation activities to achieve a 100% waste recycling rate and take the lead in practicing ESG management values as an industry-leading company.”
