EcoBio Holdings, a specialized company in upcycling business and ESG led by CEO Song Hyo-sun, announced on the 6th that it has been selected as a private support operator for the Ministry of Environment’s “2024 Biogas-Based Clean Hydrogen Production Facility Installation Project” public contest.
Clean hydrogen is produced by upgrading methane (CH4), the main component of biogas generated through the anaerobic digestion process of organic waste resources such as sewage sludge, into biomethane, and then producing hydrogen through an SMR (Steam Methane Reformer) reactor. Compared to hydrogen produced using fossil fuel city gas, the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are reduced by about 85% or more, and it is classified as Green Hydrogen in Europe.
Through this selection as a private support operator, EcoBio Holdings will receive approximately 6.3 billion KRW in national funding from the Ministry of Environment and invest a total project cost of 12.7 billion KRW to install a clean hydrogen production facility with a capacity of 500 kg/day near the company’s currently operated Magok Eco Hydrogen Charging Station in Seoul, capable of supplying fuel to more than 100 hydrogen vehicles daily.
EcoBio Holdings, a strong small and medium enterprise in the biogas resource utilization sector, has been striving to expand the foundation for renewable energy distribution and greenhouse gas reduction through biogas utilization, including domestic biogas energy and automotive fuel projects, operation of the Sangam hydrogen station, and construction and operation of the Magok Eco Hydrogen Charging Station. Leveraging its experience and know-how in related projects, the company plans to establish safe and sound clean hydrogen production and utilization facilities.
Kim Young-min, Vice President of EcoBio Holdings, stated, “The clean hydrogen produced through this private support project will be supplied to passenger and commercial hydrogen vehicles such as hydrogen cars, nearby route hydrogen buses, and hydrogen cleaning vehicles.” He added, “By producing clean hydrogen from sewage generated by Seoul citizens and supplying it as fuel, we can contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, and it is expected that about 1,600 tons of greenhouse gas reduction will occur annually during project implementation.”
Meanwhile, through this selection as a private support operator for the clean hydrogen production facility, EcoBio Holdings plans to diversify its biogas resource utilization business and expand its scope for follow-up projects.
