Passengers using domestic flights operated by Korean Air and Jin Air can now complete airport departure procedures without an ID card or boarding pass, using only the smartphone application 'PASS'.

On the 6th, the three major telecom companies (SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus) and Korea Airports Corporation announced that they have newly added Korean Air and Jin Air to the list of partner airlines for the 'PASS Smart Boarding Pass' service, which allows simultaneous verification of ID and boarding pass through the PASS app at all 14 domestic airports nationwide.

Accordingly, the number of airlines offering the domestic 'PASS Smart Boarding Pass' service has expanded to a total of seven, including Jeju Air, T'way Air, Eastar Jet, Air Seoul, and Hi Air.

Launched in collaboration between the three telecom companies and Korea Airports Corporation in August last year for domestic travelers, the PASS Smart Boarding Pass service has been used by approximately 225,000 travelers as of the end of last month, enhancing convenience in air travel services.

The PASS Smart Boarding Pass combines the PASS mobile ID (mobile verification services for resident registration cards and driver’s licenses) with domestic boarding passes. When a QR code is generated within the app, it is presented during the boarding process for authentication.

Previously, passengers boarding domestic flights had to present physical boarding passes and ID cards separately for airport departure procedures and identity verification. Now, these can be authenticated at once through the PASS app. It can also be used in situations requiring presentation of the boarding pass, such as duty-free purchases.

Customers wishing to use the PASS Smart Boarding Pass can access the 'Mobile ID' menu on the main screen of each telecom company’s PASS app, register their resident registration card or driver’s license, and agree to the terms of use for the 'Smart Ticket Service'.

When booking and purchasing a ticket, if the personal information provided to the purchase site, such as name and phone number, matches the information registered in the PASS app, the PASS Smart Boarding Pass is automatically linked when the customer checks in before boarding the flight.

In particular, based on the PASS mobile ID applying the 'real-time one-person one-device authentication policy,' identity information stored on the ID and airline check-in information can be queried in real time, enhancing security. Additionally, screen capture prevention and a 'one-time QR code' that refreshes every 30 seconds block the possibility of forgery or tampering.

The list of partner airlines for the PASS Smart Boarding Pass is expected to continue expanding, with Asiana Airlines planned to be added within this year.

Meanwhile, as a follow-up to the recent ICT regulatory sandbox business plan amendment, PASS now allows verification of resident registration numbers through the 'Mobile Driver’s License Verification Service.' With the related Road Traffic Act amendment promulgated and scheduled to take effect on July 31, its scope of use is expected to broaden further.

At polling stations for the 22nd National Assembly election held on the 10th of next month, the PASS mobile ID can be used instead of a physical ID card. Showing the detailed information display process of the mobile ID to election staff allows verification of the voter’s identity by comparing the photo on the ID with the face and confirming the name, date of birth, and address.

Starting in May, identity verification through the PASS mobile driver’s license will be possible when applying health insurance at medical institutions. The mobile driver’s license verification service is planned to expand within this year to medical institutions, financial sectors, telecom agency stores, and more.
