Gyeonggi Province will introduce 50 eco-friendly large-capacity double-decker electric buses this year on 16 metropolitan bus routes between Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
Gyeonggi Province will first deploy a total of 10 double-decker buses in Gimpo City, including 4 buses on route 8600, which runs between Gimpo and Seoul Station. Additionally, 4 buses on route 3008 running between Suwon and Yongin to Gangnam, Yangjae, and Sadang Stations, 5 buses on route G5100, and 5 buses on route 5000 will be sequentially introduced within the year depending on the installation status of electric charging stations and vehicle manufacturing schedules.
Since 2021, Gyeonggi Province has been introducing eco-friendly double-decker electric buses on metropolitan bus routes. With the introduction of these 50 buses, the total number of double-decker electric buses will increase to 146.
The double-decker electric buses are domestically developed vehicles, featuring 11 seats on the first floor and 59 seats on the second floor, accommodating up to 70 passengers. Designed as low-floor buses for the convenience of transportation-vulnerable groups, the first floor includes 3 foldable seats to provide space for 2 wheelchairs.
Unlike conventional internal combustion engine vehicles such as natural gas or diesel buses, the double-decker electric buses are eco-friendly metropolitan transportation means with zero carbon dioxide emissions. They also produce significantly less noise and vibration compared to existing vehicles, which is expected to provide passengers with a more comfortable transportation service.
Kim Sang-su, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Transportation Bureau, stated, "Expanding the introduction of electric low-floor buses will greatly contribute to alleviating standing passenger demand on metropolitan buses in the Seoul metropolitan area and will also significantly help improve air quality. Gyeonggi Province will continue to promote the transition to eco-friendly double-decker electric buses that combine both transport capacity and environmental friendliness, and we will do our best to ensure safe and comfortable commuting convenience for Gyeonggi residents."
