Expansion Planned from Storage and Delivery for Domestic and Foreign Tourists' Carriers to Daily Logistics Services

Dongdaemun-gu, Cheongnyangni Station-Centered Digital Logistics Pilot Project Promotion

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 6th that it has been finally selected last month for the ‘2024 Digital Logistics Service Demonstration Project’ promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, in collaboration with Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Metro, by applying for the ‘Urban Railway Infrastructure Utilization Goods Storage and Delivery Service Construction Project.’

The ‘Digital Logistics Service Demonstration Project’ is a project promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport since 2021 to improve the efficiency of the existing logistics system by applying various smart technologies across all fields of the logistics industry, including transportation, storage, and cargo handling.

To select demonstration project sites this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conducted a public contest targeting local governments nationwide for two months from November 2023 to January 2024, evaluating project plans submitted by a total of 10 local governments, and finally selecting five local governments (▲Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul ▲Incheon Metropolitan City ▲Busan Metropolitan City ▲Seosan-si, Chungnam ▲Gimcheon-si, Gyeongbuk).

The ‘Urban Railway Infrastructure Utilization Goods Storage and Delivery Service Construction Project,’ applied for by Dongdaemun-gu in collaboration with Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Metro, is a project to build a system that connects parcels of individuals and companies to the first-last mile (the first and last stages of transportation and logistics systems) using urban railway public infrastructure.

This project is expected to expand from luggage storage and delivery services for domestic and foreign tourists to daily logistics services.

The district has established a close cooperation system with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Transport Institute, Seoul Metro, and related companies, and will officially start the project from March, aiming to launch the service as early as the second half of this year. The service will be introduced first at Cheongnyangni Station, a major transportation hub, and then expanded to urban railway stations within the district.

Starting with this public contest project, the district plans to establish its own unique smart logistics infrastructure by introducing ▲eco-friendly lifestyle-based logistics functions ▲linkage projects with traditional market MFCs (Micro Fulfillment Centers, urban order and delivery facilities) such as Cheongnyangni Market, and spread successful cases in the logistics field using smart technology to other local governments.

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung said, “We will actively cooperate with related organizations to provide convenient luggage delivery services to tourists visiting Dongdaemun-gu and our residents, and further implement daily logistics services to solidly promote this project.” He added, “We will continue to integrate smart technologies into various fields to become a ‘Green Smart City Dongdaemun-gu’ that considers the safety, convenience, and environment of our residents.”
