Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, participating in the nationwide campaign to reduce plastic usage, 'Bye Bye Plastic Challenge'.
The BBP Challenge is a campaign that encourages reducing plastic use in daily life and promoting responsible consumption. Participants post a pledge on social media to reduce unnecessary plastic use and nominate others to continue the campaign.
Mayor Lee joined the campaign following a nomination from Kim Seong-geun, President of POSTECH, who participated in the BBP Challenge last month.
Mayor Lee Gang-deok stated, “I will take the lead with Pohang City employees in practicing the reduction of unnecessary plastic use in daily life,” and added, “I hope citizens will actively join in reducing plastic use to protect the Earth.”
Additionally, Mayor Lee nominated three individuals to continue the challenge: Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, Seoul, Pohang’s sister city; Nam Han-kwon, Mayor of Ulleung County; and Jeon Ik-hyeon, Chairman of the Pohang Steel Industrial Complex Management Corporation.
Pohang City is making efforts to create a plastic cup-free government office by encouraging employees to lead by example using reusable cups and personal tumblers. The city is also promoting a support project to encourage the reuse of reusable containers at coffee shops and funeral homes, where disposable product use is high.
