"Collected Ten Million Won"... Next to It, a Handwritten Letter from a Blood Cancer Security Guard

Held Fundraising Event and Donated 10 Million Won

A touching story has been shared about apartment residents raising a large sum of money to help a security guard diagnosed with cancer.

On the 4th, a photo of a notice from an apartment complex in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, was posted on an online community. The notice was taken by a delivery worker who had delivered to the apartment, and he said, "I am sharing this notice filled with the warm hearts of the residents."

The notice read, "Security guard Mr. A, who has diligently served our apartment since 2016, was recently diagnosed with blood cancer and will only be working until February. We wish for Mr. A’s speedy recovery and want to come together with helping hands during this difficult time." Following this, information about the fundraising dates and locations was provided.

The fundraising event took place last month, and a new notice posted on the 4th was updated to state that the collected funds had been delivered to Mr. A. The total amount raised by the apartment residents was 10 million won, all of which was given to Mr. A. The apartment management committee said, "Many people contributed their hearts either through the Lifestyle Culture Support Office or by directly giving donations to Mr. A during holidays or nighttime," and added, "We sincerely thank all the apartment residents once again for their warm encouragement and support."

Mr. A also sent a handwritten letter in response to the residents’ support. He expressed, "It is hard to believe that I, who have received so much love for eight years, am unexpectedly retiring. I will receive treatment well and recover fully to greet you all in good health. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again," sharing his feelings.

Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "After only seeing news about residents mistreating security guards, hearing this warms my heart," "I hope Mr. A stays healthy," and "Apartments like this deserve to have their property values rise."

While some apartment complexes face so-called 'resident power abuse' controversies, there are also stories of residents coming together to support managers and security guards. Two years ago, in an apartment complex located in Changwon, Gyeongnam, a resident vote was held on whether to reduce the number of security guards by half. The majority voted against it, allowing the security guards to keep their jobs safely.

At that time, an appeal urging opposition spread online, drawing attention from netizens. The resident who wrote the appeal said, "They say reducing security guards would lower the management fee by 15,000 won per month. Although my own living situation is not affluent, I do not want to take away jobs just to save 10,000 won on management fees," and added, "I want to show my child that our apartment is a warm neighborhood that chooses to live together in harmony."
