Gyeonggi Province will conduct a public-private joint tuberculosis screening for dairy cows to detect the zoonotic infectious disease 'bovine tuberculosis' at an early stage.
On the 5th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will carry out tuberculosis screening for 71,000 heads of cattle this year at 2,139 dairy farms in the province by mobilizing local public veterinarians.
Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic infectious disease that can infect both cattle and humans simultaneously. When infected in cattle, it causes weakness and reduced milk production, and it can also be transmitted to humans, so regular annual screenings are conducted.
If abnormal livestock are found during the public veterinarian screening, livestock quarantine officers from the Gyeonggi Provincial Animal Hygiene Testing Laboratory will conduct an epidemiological investigation related to the infected tuberculosis livestock and dispose of all suspected infected animals.
Jung Bong-su, director of the Gyeonggi Northern Animal Hygiene Testing Laboratory, stated, "We will do our best to eradicate zoonotic infectious diseases by ensuring that public veterinarians provide customized screenings for farms and education suitable for livestock farming sites."
Meanwhile, since 2003, Gyeonggi Province has been providing customized services such as rapid tuberculosis screening through public veterinarians and milking time inspections tailored to local conditions and farm characteristics. Last year, bovine tuberculosis occurred in 1,312 heads of cattle across 233 farms nationwide.
