President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on the 4th that he will accelerate the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, a key long-cherished project of Daegu City, to achieve the goal of opening by 2030.
On the same day, President Yoon presided over the 16th Public Discussion Forum under the theme "Daegu Rising with Advanced New Industries" at Kyungpook National University in Buk-gu, Daegu, and stated that a metropolitan express railway connecting Seodaegu, the new airport, and Uiseong will be constructed to expand the linked high-speed transportation network.
In his opening remarks, President Yoon explained, "In 1987, the textile industry centered in Daegu was the first single industry in Korea to achieve $10 billion in exports, and Samsung, now the world's leading global company, started its business at a noodle factory in Ingye-dong, Daegu." He added, "The Saemaul Undong (New Village Movement), which revolutionized our spirit under President Park Chung-hee, also originated nearby in Cheongdo and first raised its flag in Daegu and Gyeongbuk."
President Yoon emphasized, "For Daegu to make a new leap forward, it must innovate its old industrial structure and significantly improve its outdated transportation infrastructure. The government will provide bold support to enable revolutionary changes in Daegu."
First, President Yoon stated that the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport will be steadily promoted to serve as a catalyst for innovation in Daegu's transportation network. He said, "The new airport construction is a promise I made during my presidential campaign and a long-standing wish of Daegu citizens. We will accelerate the construction of the new airport to achieve the 2030 opening goal while also expanding the linked high-speed transportation network."
He also explained that a privately funded highway passing through Palgongsan will be smoothly opened in time with the new airport's opening, improving accessibility between East Daegu and Donggunwi.
President Yoon said that based on Daegu's traditional strengths in machinery, metal, and parts industries, the government will focus on fostering robotics and future mobility industries. He announced an investment of 200 billion won in the national robot test field in Dalseong-gun, which passed the preliminary feasibility study last August. Daegu Suseong Alpha City will be developed as a national digital innovation zone, becoming a core hub for research and development (R&D) leading the convergence of manufacturing and digital industries.

President Yoon pledged to prioritize infrastructure investment worth 100 billion won to develop Palgongsan, which was upgraded to a national park, into a new tourist resource for Daegu. He also promised investment support for Daegu's tourism industry, including designating Dongseong-ro, the city's center, as Daegu's first tourism special zone.
Furthermore, under the goal of growing Daegu into a cultural and artistic hub and a world-class cultural city, he hinted at plans to promptly build the National Musical Complex and the National Museum of Modern Art, which were campaign pledges.
President Yoon emphasized that the quotas of prestigious local medical schools such as Kyungpook National University, Yeungnam University, Keimyung University, and Daegu Catholic University College of Medicine will be sufficiently increased, and the local talent quotas will be greatly expanded to ensure high-quality medical services in the provinces. Facility investments in national university medical schools will also be expanded. He said, "The government is currently strongly promoting an increase in the number of doctors, and we will make sure that regions including Daegu fully benefit from this."
President Yoon promised to promptly resolve the odor problems caused by the dyeing industrial complex, landfill sites, and sewage treatment plants, which have been causing inconvenience to Daegu citizens.
About 100 people, including entrepreneurs, parents, students, local residents, and Daegu Local Era Committee members engaged in advanced industries such as robotics, secondary batteries, and data in the Daegu region, attended the discussion forum. From the government and local authorities, Woo Dong-gi, Chairman of the Local Era Committee; Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment; Baek Won-guk, 2nd Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City; Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education; and Hong Won-hwa, President of Kyungpook National University, participated.
