"Reckless Japan Travel Video on March 1st Movement Day"... 260K YouTuber Apologizes Amid 'Unsubscribe Bombardment'

Video Made Private After Continued Criticism Even Toward Apology

A YouTuber who posted travel content about Tokyo, Japan, a day before the March 1st Movement Day (Samiljeol), faced severe criticism and eventually made the video private and issued an apology.

On the 29th at around 8:30 PM, 'Hanu,' a YouTuber with 260,000 subscribers, uploaded a video of a trip to Tokyo on their channel. Posting a Japan travel video just over three hours before March 1st led to a flood of critical comments.

As the controversy continued, Hanu commented, "The upload was delayed from the original schedule, so I thought it was right to upload it quickly today, but only now did I realize that since tomorrow is March 1st, it might cause uncomfortable feelings. I apologize to those who were uncomfortable due to my thoughtlessness, and I will plan upload schedules more carefully in the future. Thank you for your hard work this past week."

However, as critical comments persisted and subscribers continued to unsubscribe, Hanu made the video private and wrote on the community board, "I carelessly thought I could just check better next time, but it seems I caused discomfort to viewers on March 1st. I am sorry for causing uncomfortable feelings throughout the night. I promise to think more carefully before uploading in the future. This video will be made private, and I will come back with the next video."

Some argued, "It’s not like the trip was on March 1st, nor was the video uploaded on March 1st," and questioned, "Is it excessive to criticize uploading a Tokyo travel video on February 29th, a day before? Then is it okay two days or three days before?"

This is not the first controversy of this kind. The large discount store Homeplus was criticized for holding a Japanese whiskey discount event on March 1st, which was seen as encouraging the purchase of Japanese products on that day. Actress Go So-young also apologized after posting photos on social media of her trip to Japan with her husband, actor Jang Dong-gun, and their children on Liberation Day last year.
