Opening of 8.1km Section of Local Road No. 98 'Namyangju Onam~Sudong'

On May 29, an 8.1km section of Local Road No. 98 connecting Onam-ri, Onam-eup, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province to Jidun-ri, Sudong-myeon, linking the east and west of northern Gyeonggi, was opened. As a result, weekend travel time from Sanggye-dong, Seoul to Daeseong-ri, Gapyeong is expected to be reduced by more than an hour.

Local Road No. 98 Onam~Sudong is a four-lane road with a width of 18.5m. It starts from the Onam Intersection in Onam-eup, Namyangju-si, which is the terminus of the Naegak~Onam section opened in December 2013, and passes through Onam Reservoir, Palhyeon-ri, Eokbawi, Saetgol, then tunnels through Cheonmasan Mountain (812m above sea level) to connect to Jidun-ri, Sudong-myeon.

Previously, residents of northwestern Gyeonggi had to use National Road No. 46 and detour an additional 32km to travel from Sanggye-dong, Seoul to Daeseong-ri, Gapyeong in northeastern Gyeonggi. With the opening of the Onam~Sudong section, the travel distance has been reduced by more than 24km.

Earlier, Gyeonggi Province included the Local Road No. 98 Onam~Sudong project in the ‘3rd National and Local Road Five-Year Plan’ in 2012 and proceeded with the project. Construction began in November 2017, and the road was opened after 6 years and 3 months. The total project cost was 253.7 billion KRW, including 136.6 billion KRW from the national government and 117.1 billion KRW from the provincial government.

This project is the first road to open following the proclamation of the ‘Year One of the Gyeonggi Eastern Region Social Overhead Capital (SOC) Grand Development Plan’ announced by Gyeonggi Province on May 2.

The transportation conditions and inconveniences for residents in northeastern Gyeonggi, including Namyangju, are expected to be greatly improved, contributing significantly to reducing logistics costs and promoting regional development in northeastern Gyeonggi.

Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administration of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Narrowly, it is expected to serve as a growth axis connecting the northern Namyangju living areas such as Onam, Byeollae, and Toegyewon with the eastern living areas such as Hwado, Sudong, and Joan, forming a single living zone. Broadly, it will help alleviate concentration from the northeast to Seoul and induce a spatial structure that strengthens mutual connections by using nearby Guri City and Gapyeong County as hinterland cities."
