Busan Aviation High School Opens... First Step in Comprehensive Reform of Specialized High School System

Training Excellent Aviation Professionals for Aviation Organizations and Regional Settlement

March 4 Opening Ceremony... Full-Scale Educational Program Launch

‘Busan Aviation High School,’ which aims to bridge the educational gap in the western Busan area and cultivate the nation’s top aviation professionals in line with the opening of Gadeokdo New Airport, will open its doors in March.

Busan Aviation High School (Principal Kim Hyung-wook), transformed from the former Western Busan Technical High School into a Busan-style Meister High School, has established state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to nurture aviation talent rooted in the local community and has begun full-scale operation of its curriculum.

First, Busan Aviation High School has established three departments: Aviation Maintenance (2 classes), Aircraft Mechanics (2 classes), and Aviation Electrical and Electronics (2 classes), enrolling a total of 96 students with 16 students per class. Among the new students, 88 are from Busan, and 8 are from other regions such as Gimhae and Yangsan in Gyeongnam.

These students will receive top-level education through industry-academia cooperation between the aviation high school and aviation-related organizations and companies such as the Republic of Korea Navy, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), Korean Air, and Air Busan.

Depending on their major, students will learn foundational and practical subjects including ▲Basic Aircraft Operations ▲Aviation Regulations ▲General Aircraft Maintenance ▲Aircraft Gas Turbine Engines ▲Milling Processing.

In particular, Busan Aviation High School plans to establish the ‘Busan Aviation High School Technical Education Center’ by early 2025 with approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to support students in obtaining aircraft maintenance technician certification.

Additionally, by 2027, the school intends to build a dormitory with top-tier facilities on campus to support stable educational activities. Until the new dormitory is completed, students will use the dormitory facilities at nearby Silla University.

Alongside this, various educational activities will be carried out to enhance students’ professional capabilities, including support for teacher training to improve expertise, support for industry-experienced part-time teachers, and assistance with student career activities.

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will hold the opening and entrance ceremony for ‘Busan Aviation High School,’ the first school under the specialized high school system reorganization, on the 4th of next month at 2 p.m. in the school’s Baekyang Hall. Attendees will include students, parents, faculty, Superintendent Ha Yun-su, Mayor Park Hyung-joon, National Assembly member Jang Je-won, Sasang District Mayor Jo Byung-gil, and representatives from various companies.

Superintendent Ha Yun-su of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education stated, “To address current challenges facing Busan such as ultra-low birth rates, population aging, and talent outflow, we must devote all efforts to establishing excellent schools linked to the region and nurturing talent. I hope Busan Aviation High School becomes a cradle for cultivating professionals who settle in the region.”

Students in grades 2 and 3, excluding the new entrants, will continue their education and graduate under the existing departmental system of the former Western Busan Technical High School.
