Gyeonggi Province is promoting the development of the ‘Quantum Technology and Industry’ ecosystem, which is the foundation of core industries such as semiconductors.
On the 29th, Gyeonggi Province announced that the ‘Gyeonggi Province Quantum Industry Promotion and Support Ordinance,’ which serves as the institutional basis for fostering quantum technology and industry, has passed the provincial council.
This ordinance was proposed by Nam Gyeong-sun, Vice Chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, after gathering opinions from various stakeholders including industries, universities, research institutes, and public institutions.
It includes the basis for systematic development and support of the quantum industry, such as establishing a basic plan for focused cultivation of quantum science technology and industry, project support, financial assistance, operation of committees, and building cooperative systems.
Quantum entities simultaneously possess discrete particle properties and wave properties capable of superposition. Quantum technology applies quantum physical characteristics to information technologies such as computers, communications, and sensors, enabling ultra-high-speed computation, ultra-reliable security, and ultra-precise measurement.
It is widely used in major industries domestically and internationally, including semiconductors, defense, energy, and medical fields. The Ministry of Science and ICT selected quantum, artificial intelligence, and advanced bio as the three major future transformative (game-changing) technologies this year.
Based on this ordinance, Gyeonggi Province will gradually implement the basic plan for fostering the quantum industry ecosystem, organize quantum forums, respond to government public projects, establish cooperation systems among industry, academia, research, and government, and promote global exchange and cooperation.
Song Eun-sil, Director of the Semiconductor Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "With the enactment of the Gyeonggi Province Quantum Industry Promotion and Support Ordinance, an institutional foundation has been established for fostering quantum technology and the quantum industry ecosystem," adding, "We will build an industrial ecosystem centered on quantum materials, parts, and equipment, including the semiconductor industry."
