Gangbuk-gu, Ongoing Recruitment for Tree Caretakers

Participation open to individuals, clubs, schools, and companies... Volunteer hours recognized up to 2 hours on weekdays, 4 hours on weekends and holidays

Gangbuk-gu, Ongoing Recruitment for Tree Caretakers

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is continuously recruiting residents to participate in the ‘Tree Caretaker’ project, which involves directly managing street trees and green spaces in the area.

The Tree Caretaker project is a program where residents adopt and voluntarily care for street trees, green belts (flower beds under street trees), and other urban green spaces to revitalize urban greenery.

Those selected as Tree Caretakers will be responsible for watering trees, removing weeds, and collecting fallen leaves. Activities can be renewed annually.

Anyone who loves nature and is interested in volunteer work can participate, and not only individuals but also clubs, schools, and companies can apply as groups.

For individuals, the main care target is the street trees in front of their home or building, and each person can adopt up to five trees.

Groups will be responsible for small facility spaces such as neighborhood forests and village yards, as well as street trees along main roads, while schools will manage street trees and green belts along school routes. Tree Caretakers can attach name tags of individuals or groups to the trees and green belts they manage.

The district office plans to provide Tree Caretakers with cleaning and safety supplies such as tongs, trash bags, and activity vests. Those who wish can receive volunteer hours credit for up to 2 hours on weekdays and 4 hours on weekends and holidays.

In December, the district will select five teams with outstanding performance as Tree Caretakers and award them a small prize. For further inquiries, contact the Gangbuk-gu Office Parks and Greenery Division.

Last year, 237 Tree Caretakers cared for 50 street trees along seven routes including Samyang-ro and maintained 1,371㎡ of green spaces such as small unused lands, protecting the nature and environment of Gangbuk-gu.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “The Tree Caretaker project is a meaningful and valuable activity where residents voluntarily nurture the local nature and environment,” adding, “I hope residents take an interest in creating beautiful neighborhoods and actively participate.”
